Ruby Rucker Cooper
I am the fifth child of the eight children born to Dr. Douglas Rucker and Ruby King Rucker. I was raised and educated in Lancaster, SC. My father is a dentist who has been practicing dentistry for over fifty years and my mother was a first grade teacher before quitting her job to become a full-time homemaker, and “super mommy”.
As a young adult, I marveled at the careers of my uncle, Timothy Crawford, Esq., who maintained his very own practice for over thirty years in Philadelphia, PA and aunt, Patricia King, who was the first African American female attorney in Charlotte NC. Through them I was able to connect with famed attorneys, Willie Gary and O.T. Wells who instilled in me that being an attorney was more than just the degree but the vehicle to become the voice of those in need of justice.
I finished Spelman College with a Bachelors of Science in 1995. After graduating from Spelman College, I worked for Primetime Omnimedia, a strategic marketing company that serviced clients such as Michael Lee Chin, Ted Turner, Russell Simmons, and various other high profiled clients until I entered The University of South Carolina School of Law in 1996. I received a Juris Doctorate Degree from The University of South Carolina School of Law in 1999.
My husband Ford Sawyer Cooper, who is an orthodontist with practices in Charlotte NC, Rock Hill SC, and Spartanburg SC, and I married a week after I graduated from law school, and we recently celebrated our fourteenth anniversary. The lord has blessed us with three beautiful children, Ford Jr., Riley Elizabeth, and Elle Carole. Like most parents feel they bring us so much joy and laughter! My family and extended family’s most recent undertaking is a reality show called “The Ruckers-Southern Royals” (WeTv Fall 2013). In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, cooking, exercising and volunteering at various organizations that support education.
